Boots on the Ground: Lessons Learned

This engaging panel discussion will present real stories about real green renovations and provide candid lessons learned.  Based on the hugely popular Boots on the Ground professional talks that take place throughout Canada, hear from some of the founding members - a builder, two designers, an energy evaluator, and a client - about lessons learned when considering a green renovation and top tips for getting great outcomes for your green renovation.

Terrell Wong: Terrell won the national award for the Archetype Sustainable Home in 2006 and won the award for Renovated Home of the Year in the Home Sweet Home for her own 100yr old residence in 2011.  Her pioneering work with rammed earth was showcased in “Fine Homebuilding”.  She is the past president of Passive Buildings Canada and is an active member of Ontario Natural Building Coalition and Passive House Canada.  At Stone’s Throw Design we utilize integrated design to provide our clients with the gamut of architectural services. Greg Labbé: Greg runs the research Lab for the Building Science Graduate Program at Toronto Metropolitan University for the last 6 years. Prior to this, he founded BlueGreen Consulting Group which specialises in non-destructive building envelope testing services. He also worked for a dozen years as a home energy auditor and retrofits manager for Green$aver. He is the founder of Passive Building Canada’s High Performance Design meets Boots on the Ground event.

Bruce March: Bruce is the principal/founder of a research oriented architectural practice licensed in Ontario and located in Toronto. Agritecture’s focus includes developing plant-based design that supports a healthier, happier and more sustainable lifestyle. As a graduate of the acclaimed Waterloo School of Architecture and a LEED®AP, additional training/research includes Passive House, Living Building Challenge, Net Zero, strawbale, hempcrete, permaculture, edible forest gardening and urban farming with Homestead.to. Advocacy includes bioregional design for climate for both living in place and in greater harmony with nature.

Chris Phillips: Chris formed Greening Homes Ltd. in 2007 with the mandate to minimize the environmental impact of his work wherever possible.Chris holds a MBSc from TMU, is a graduate of the Sustainable Design & Build program at Fleming College, and is a LEED® AP. He has lectured on a variety of green building-related topics at institutions throughout the GTA.

Greening Homes has won numerous awards, including a national award in 2014 for what was at the time North America's most energy efficient retrofit. In 2016, Chris won the CaGBC’s prestigious Leadership Award for his contributions to the green building industry.

Bettina Hoar: Bettina is a Sustainability Facilitator specialized in promoting comfort, health, wellbeing and belonging in the built environment. She founded Sage Living in 2014; her consulting work focuses on finding ways to improve the lives of inhabitants in the built environment, advocating for the “P of People” of the 3 P’s of a sustainable building.  Bettina is the Chair of Sustainable Buildings Canada; she created and runs the Better Buildings Boot Camp; she is a frequent guest lecturer and mentor.
